Getting started

A five-minute tour

A short walk through capturing, clarifying, and doing, using your own first items.

Setup can add your Areas and Contexts before you start. If you would like to do that first, see Getting set up.

1. Capture something

Think of three things on your mind, big or small, and capture each one with Quick capture. Do not worry about wording or where it belongs yet. See Capturing a thought.

2. Look at your Inbox

Your Inbox now holds those three items. It is a holding place, not a to-do list.

3. Clarify each item

Open the first item and decide what it is. A single step you will do goes to Next. Something you are waiting on from someone else goes to Waiting For. An idea for later goes to Someday/Maybe. See Clarifying an item.

4. Add context

Give items an Area, such as Work or Home, and a Context, such as the place or tool you need. These make it easy to filter later.

5. Decide what to do

Open Next to see everything ready to act on, or use Do Now to pick what fits where you are.

6. Come back for a review

Once a week, use the Weekly Review to keep the system current. That habit is what makes the system trustworthy.
